Recommendations for Funders

Ways to Accelerate the Transfer of Research to Practice

  1. Solicit proposals that investigate interventions in multiple settings and document that these settings are representative of those to which the program wishes to generalize.
  2. Fund novel and innovative investigations of ways to enhance reach, adoption, implementation and maintenance of behavior change interventions.
  3. Require standard and comprehensive reporting of exclusions, participation rates, and representativeness of both participants and settings.
  4. Fund sequential program changes and time-series studies, replications, multiple baseline and cross-over designs, and other designs in addition to RCTs that can efficiently and practically address key issues in translation.
  5. Fund programs that investigate and can demonstrate high levels of implementation and consistent outcomes across a wide range of intervention agents similar to those in applied settings.
  6. Require a maintenance/sustainability phase in research projects and implementation of plans to enhance institutionalization once the original research has been completed. Alternatively, fund competing applications to test the long-term effects and generalization of initially successful programs.
  7. Encourage innovation in intervention design and standardization in reporting on process and outcome measures at both individual AND setting/intervention agent levels.
